What is acceptable for spending down in order to qualify for Medicaid?

Can you complete home repairs such as new roof, entrance ramps modifying bathroom for handicap accessibility, etc.?

Yes, my mother has been paying a set amount a month until they finish all of the paperwork and my dad qualifies for Medicaid. They told her before they can resubmit the paperwork for Medicaid they need her to spend down but there are limits to what qualifies. She needs to apply for a hearing. The nursing facility staff were not very helpful and would not offer what would qualify as spending down. Thank you very much for your time and assistance! :)

A roof would definitely qualify, as would handicap modifications. But you still have to pay the nursing home in the meantime. Usually a nursing home assigns you to a benefits counselor. Have they done that?

My Dad is the one in the nursing home and my mother is fine right now to live on her own but needs to fix the house so that it is easier for her to get around. She applied for Medicaid but was told she needs to spend down in order to qualify for my dad. Would these type of home repairs qualify as spending down in order to reapply for Medicaid for my father who is in the nursing home?

You can, but that seems rather pointless, as MERP will be taking title to the property after she dies. Talk to the financial aid counselor at the nursing home or assisted living center. They are very helpful
