My mother is in assisted living. Soon her funds will run out and ss and small pension will pay 1/2 of the monthly cost. Then what happens? She is 91 years old and requires full care there. The cost is $5500 a month she collects from ss and small penison about 2500 a month the rest we pay with the funds she still has left in her bank account. With whats left she should have 6 months left until we are at the point where she has no more funds. Is there any governement assistance to make up the shortfall so she can stay in her assisted living place.

Yes definetly do not pay anyone. As post above stated it is not legal for anyone to charge you to file for VA or any other federal benefits. Many people do not know this and pay hundreds to shady people praying on the elderly and those caring for them. The process is not hard and if you go to your local va office and sit with a rep you have a point of contact that can keep u up to date. Also if you ever have to move her your rep can email you the forms. Our rep answers my emails same day and has even helped me help others so it pays to make the trip and have a face to face in my opinion.

Your mom should qualify for aid and attendance now, and has probably been eligile for some time. Definitely make an appointment with your city's Veterans Service Office. What you want to do is have them sent a Letter of Intent to Claim. That way, when the application is approved several months down the road, the payments will be retroactive to the date of the letter. You have about a year to get all your documentation together, but I would recommend that you send the completed package all at once rather than a little at a time when completed. That's what we did with my mom, and it only took 4 months! Less chance of lost items, and they won't put it in the "incomplete" pile where it could get lost or delayed. Do NOT pay anyone to do this for you...it is illegal in some cases, and at least very shady in most cases. I had a guy from VetsAngels (or was it VeteransAngels) contact my mom trying to get her to put her assets in an trust/annuity to ensure that she qualified. Thing is, if she had done that and NOT qualified, she wouldn't have had access to the money if she did need it. And he would have happily taken his commission check to the bank. Happily, our local fellow at the Veterans Service Office was WONDERFUL. Yes the paperwork is a pain...the VSO may have more legitimate references for help. You don't need a lawyer or a degree in rocket science...LOL. Good luck and best wishes!

Another suggestion I have is to look into Adult Family Homes for your mom. We have moved my mom into one here in Michigan. They are homes where the owner lives onsite and offers board and care to residents. In Florida the homes are licensed by the state and they have a limit of 5 residents. The cost for these homes are usually quite affordable for instance my mother pays 3200 a month for full care. They are great for people with dementia because the small setting is easy for them to get use to and the caregivers are not always changing so they get use to the caregivers as well and respond better. I know you said you live in Florida if you don't mind sharing her city I will do a search and see what is available in her area. Also on the A & A from VA she should qualify now that her funds are so low and the medical costs are high. Again if you check my profile you will find a link to the entire process we used. It was very easy and quick for us. Hope this is helpful.

She is in South Florida. My Dad was a World War II vet. Fought in Europe 4th armored division. Tried aid and attaendance a couple years ago. They said she had to much money. I can't tell you what a hassle it was feeling out all the forms and documents.

You need to address this with the administration now. Do they accept medicaid? Was she or her husband a vet? If so you could try for Aid and Attendance Benefits. What state are you in?

Some States have a waiver program where they will help pay some of the Assisted Living cost.... but it depending on your State, if your Mom can qualify, the different rules and regulations, and different programs.

I see from your profile that your Mom has Alzheimer's/Dementia, depending on her condition, maybe should could qualify for full payment for continuing care in a nursing home under Medicaid.
