How to get fluids in person with dementia who insists on swishing and spitting almost all liquids?

Has anybody else been through this??

She will still take both, does better on solids really. Today was a good day and I was able to get plenty in, she also loves Ensure milkshakes.

If she is still able to consume solids then you can give her thickened fluids, it doesn't have to be thin to hydrate.

The swallowing reflex was delayed when the temperature of the food was close to body temperature. The actual swallowing time shortened when the temperature difference increases. So that means the food should be sensibly warmer or cooler than the mouth.

I have all the paperwork, poa, living will, and health care surrogate. I will not allow her to be tube fed. Going to try harder tomorrow to see if I can get more in her.

This is a sign of advanced dementia, where the awareness of food in the mouth is gone, along with the act of swallowing. It's important to know if the patient has a MOLST form or advanced directives, either allowing or refusing tube feeding.
