If your parent wants a scooter, do they need insurance for it?

GardenArtist Dec 2015
Interesting question. It might also depend on how the scooter is classified, i.e., whether it's considered an off road vehicle or something like that. It's not an all-terrain vehicle, which I believe has been addressed by insurance companies.

Perhaps you could call your insurance agent and ask.

It's interesting also because my father has one and I've never even thought of insurance coverage, but he is very careful when he uses it and lives in an area where people respect walkers or bikers and drive slowly (except for a few motorcyclists).

Depends on your state laws and where the scooter is operated. If grandma runs over a toddler in a city park or at the mall, insurance probably won't cover it. Same with these new "hoverboards", homeowners will not cover injuries that occur off the home property.
