My aunt is going to need an aging facility soon. But her only income SS and nothing else. What do we do?

No savings, small pension check of $54 a month. That's it. She is in subsidied housing now. She is currently taking Namenda.

Since she's already gone through the paperwork & vetted for subsidized, she will qualify for Medicaid financially but she will need to show to be "at need" medically for a NH. This would be doctors orders for "skilled nursing care needed". The facilities are going to need to have that to submit to the states NH Medicaid program.

To me the decisions as to which NH need to revolve around IF you want to be involved in her care & related to doing this. Like you need to have a DPOA & MPOA done naming you in addition to the HIPPA Pam mentioned. If you visit her often & you are the point person to shop & do for her (or with her), I'd look to find a facility closer to you, even if it means moving her to a totally different area than where she is now in subsidized housing. Also keep in mind that you can move them from 1 NH to another if the first NH doesn't work out or a spot opens up in your first choice NH. Once she is eligible for NH Medicaid, moving her from 1 facility to another is pretty easy as far as paperwork is concerned.

If she is already in subsidized housing, I will assume she is on Medicaid too. So you call her caseworker and get the wheels in motion for finding her a place. Be sure your aunt signs a HIPPA form so you can talk to the caseworker.

You need to start the application process for Medicaid and start checking out care facilities in your area that accept Medicaid funding.
