Have a caregiver with us at my nephew's wedding. Any advice?

To particularly help my mom so that my sister and I can enjoy the wedding. My mom had a stroke about 9 years ago and is ambulatory with a walker, but will need help in the restroom at the wedding and getting changed and ready for bed at the hotel room after the wedding and we would like to have a caregiver at the wedding to help my mom with these tasks so that my sister and I can enjoy the wedding. My dad is ambulatory with a walker also, and does not need any special help with ADLs. Any advice?

I hadn't considered the possibility of having to travel an extended distance and having to consider travel expenses. If that is the case then you may want to look into hiring a caregiver from the area where the wedding is taking place, unless you already have someone local you would prefer. Most agencies have a web presence, or there is always the good old fashioned telephone. And unless your sister volunteers, take care of this yourself, she probably has enough going on.

That's very thoughtful of you to ensure that your mother is able to enjoy the wedding.

I would also do everything I could to make the caregiver feel welcome at the wedding, introducing her to your family.

Excellent idea, shop around with the different agencies that have caregivers... you would do better if the person was licensed, bonded and insured. Ask the agency for their most requested caregiver and if that person is available.

But note the agency would probably be billing your for 24 hours or more depending on the travel time, staying overnight where you pay for his/her hotel room, and return travel time. It would be worth every dollar.

Sounds like an excellent idea! Be sure to run it by your sister and her son as the caregiver would need to be accounted for if there is a meal included.
