How do I obtain POA over my Mom without having to hire an attorney?

In the state of Georgia.

If your mother is totally competent, you get the proper form for your state, which she signs in front of a Notary Public.
If your mother is in a Nursing Home and suffers from dementia, you cannot get a POA. In this case you petition the court for Guardian status.

Curious why you don't want to use an Attorney? An Attorney would know the verbiage to use for the State of Georgia, will have the Notary and witnesses on staff, and know if your Mom understands the document she is signing.

Some people will use blank forms off the Internet, but please note, one misplaced or missing word could make the POA read differently than intended, then it would be a nightmare.
