My husband (71) was prescribed a proton pump inhibitor along with his chronic drugs. Is this really necessary?

His digestion is excellent and his appetite is small. He only wants to eat twice a day - a late breakfast and a fairly early dinner. He is diabetic but no longer on insulin - just Glucophage and his blood sugar is under control. The medication sheet said the proton pump inhibitor is "to prevent ulcers". Should this be treated as a chronic medication? He has never had an ulcer or even indigestion.

I have had orders written on a discharge paper that didn't make sense more than once. Best to discuss with a doctor who know your husband. Good luck!

The doctor is not in my town. He is attached to the hospital where my husband was. It was he who wrote "to prevent ulcers". I will however consult with my husband's usual doctor. Thanks for your quick reply.

I think you need to talk to the doctor who prescribed it and find out what the reasoning is.
