Long term care insurance for Mom. Any thoughts?

Moms lawyer suggested I look into long term care insurance for my 88 year old mom with dementia. He feels it is costly but still less expensive than paying 150k for nursing home and running out of money. Thoughts?

Yes, it is true. Traditional long term care insurance policies are not available after age 80 and certainly not after someone has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's. However, few people are aware of policies called "Short Term Care" that don't have the same health requirements and some can be written up to age 85. They will generally pay for care for only a year (which is enough for many) and will be better than no insurance at all.

Sorry, K, most long term care insurance carriers will not accept someone your Mom's age and her health [dementia].

Time to change attorneys, as your Mom needs an Elder Law Attorney, someone who would never even think of recommending such a thing.

She is too old, they don't write LTC policies if you are over 80
