My Father is absolutely immobile and can't be turned or rolled particularly after his left arm fracture. How to clean his back side?

My father is 80 years and is diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma with bone mets. He had a major fracture of his left femur and was operated in April 1st week. He could not stand since then even with complete support. He is terminally ill. Unfortunately his left arm also got fractured last week and we cannot even roll him or turn him to a side now. Even the home care (hospice) team could not suggest anything though I feel they are not very competent even if very helpful otherwise. Is there some solution for his problem as what all we need is to just be able to clean him. He also lost his speech since a fortnight. Will be grateful for any useful guidance or suggestion. ASAP.

My heart goes out to you and your father. Your hospice provider should be helping you more with this. Giving pain meds 20 minutes before major movements for bathing, bed changes, etc., is always a good idea.

You have the right to switch hospice providers at any time, but I realize that switching providers is not a pleasant thought. You have so much to do already and it takes a bit to get comfortable with an agency, the schedules, etc.

Sometimes you need to be more assertive with the agency. If they can't be of more help - you may need to find another agency.

First Of all, it is past July 1. Hopefully you have been able to wash dad. There is away to do so. Pain rx first. Wait 20 mins, then give bath, he will have to endure some discomfort. I would need to have a phone conversation to fully understand & explain.

I'm sure you've already tried rolling him with the sheet underneath him. When I worked X-Rayay nights by myself I used a slippery sliding board to roll pt,it kept him from bending him as we rolled him. This is hard to do in a hospital with the right equipment, never mind at. Home. He needs hospice care to help with daily needs, and maybe more pain meds so it would be less traumatic for him.

I was just wondering if you could raise his legs with his knees bent. Much the way you do an infant. It would take two or more people to accomplish this feat, but it might be doable. That sling thing that pargirl mentioned might just be what you need though. I would contact a different hospice and see if they would be able to deal with it. Unless you have to use the one you are using already.

I would. Contact not only hospice (they might have someone more qualified to help than the ones you have) and definitely call his doctor or maybe a nursing home to get their suggestions. I'm sure they deal with fractures and terminally ill patients all the time. Maybe some sort of wench to hoist him up. I'm not being silly or sarcastic. They have them for people who have spinal injuries or back surgeries. Don't know if Medicare would pay for it but worth a try. Good Luck and God Bless.

I feel that you need to contact hospice. They will take care of everything. I read recently where families are waiting too late and should actually be using hospice for several months.
