How can I get caregivers supplement assistance?

My sister appointed and assigned me as her POA for all her affairs and care when she was first told she is beginning to suffer dementia. We both are over 60. Her monthly check comes in her and my name and I'm the one that has to make sure all her affairs including doctor visits are in order which has severely limited me from working full time. Often times I do not have enough money to make it through the month. How can I get financial assistance for caring for her.

What is your living situation? are you living at a home that your Sister owns; or you both live at your home; or you 2 rent a place and share rent equally?

Palonzo1 , that’s a very common question asking about being paid. Majority of grown children do not get paid for caring for their parent, unless the parent is financially able to pay from their own pocket. If a parent can afford to pay you, the parent might as well hire a certified trained caregiver allowing you to keep a full-time job.

If you live in the States, see If your parent qualifies for Medicaid, the State might allow a trained Caregiver come in to help for a couple hours. Also check to see if your State is one of those States that has a “Cash and Counseling” program to help you out, it‘s worth looking into. Note that each State has their own rules, regulations, and programs.

As Maggie above mentioned, contact your county agency on aging for programs such as Case Management, Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Care, housing, care referrals, etc,... go to the website link below.... click on your State.... now click on the city/county. https://www.agingcare.com/local/Area-Agency-on-Aging

And please come back to the forums if you have any Caregiving questions, we would be more than happy to share our experiences with you, and give you ideas on what to do.

Call your area's equivalent to the Council on Aging. They should be able to direct you to the appropriate agency to meet you and your sister, evaluate her for what services may be available to her for very reasonable cost or nothing at all. They'll also be able to tell you if there are any money subsidies available for caregiving.

There's not much out there -- depending upon where you live.
