I am head over heel in debt and can't figure it out by myself. Is there someone to help me?

My home mortgage is OK.

Make the list one bill at a time. Dealing with debt issues can be depressing, so give yourself breaks while working on a list. Take a nap if it helps.

You don't mention a job or your age. But you did write that your mortgage is okay, so don't even consider a reverse mortgage as a means of getting out of debt.

Since you've been ill, you have a legitimate excuse; I assume you've also been out of, or off work as well.

Google "Lighthouse Foundation" for Pennsylvania; in Michigan, they participated in mortgage counseling and foreclosure avoidance during the recession. They may also provide nonmortgage debt counseling. This is the kind of agency that can help you. I'm sure there are others but am not familiar with Pennsylvania agencies.

Your local community's Senior Center may have some suggestions on agencies that can help with counseling.

At this point put aside the idea of getting any additional financing - with bad credit, you likely wouldn't be able to get an equity loan or a reverse mortgage.

Get one of your credit card bills. Look for the 800 number to call if you are having difficulties paying your bills. Call them in the AM.

Is it how to get out of debt that you can't figure out? If so, there are debt counselors available. If it's charge card debt, look on your statement; there usually are statements with contact information on who to call to address the situation.

But stay away from the shyster outfits that charge a fee for working out solutions.

Can you itemize the debts and amounts, figure out how much you can pay on each per moth, and work out a plan from there? Sometimes things like that can be overwhelming, so do something relaxing first to clear your mind. Listen to music, pet a cat or dog, go for a walk, read a book, watch an engrossing but positive movie... put your self in a good mood to address the issue.

Hang in there - you're not alone in this situation.
