Will my parents SS block my chances of receiving financial assistance for providing their care?

I moved my parent's in with me a month ago. I am a full time student, unemployed and receiving Food Stamps. Due to my Mom's dementia/ Alzheimer's and her safety issues as well as my stepdad's disability, I moved them in with myself and 7 year old daughter. They were to the point of not being able to take care of each other any more. My mom's confusion was becoming a danger to her health. I take them to multiple doctor's appts. and do not leave them alone for long periods of time. I am wondering is their financial assistance available to me, for providing their care? Do they have to pay me with their Social Security?.

If they decide to pay you, that would be good, it will get you off the public assistance and building your own SS account for your own old age. They do not have to pay you or house you or anything else unless you have written contract in place.

Majority of grown children do not get paid for caring for their parents, unless the parents are financially able to pay from their own pocket. If a parent can afford to pay you, the parent might as well hire a certified trained caregiver… thus allowing you to keep with your studies and/or look for a full-time job so that you can add to your own retirement.

If your parents qualifie for Medicaid, the State might allow a trained Caregiver from an Agency to come in to help a couple hours a day. Check to see if your State has “Cash and Counseling” program to help you out. Note that each State has their own rules, regulations, and programs. Some have waiting lists.

For more information, contact your local council on aging.... go to the website link below.... click on your State.... now click on the city/county. The agency should be able to direct you. https://www.agingcare.com/local/Area-Agency-on-Aging
