Are there therapeutic mats for the home to aid elderly in walking?

My grandmother is back home after being in a rehab facility. She has trouble walking as is but the plush carpet makes it harder. Are there types of sturdy plastic or rubber mats that can help her walk easier without sinking into the carpet? She's afraid of getting caught in the carpet with her walker and falling.

Can understand, You bought new carpet and its no long you have to change it. Can't you use a plastic cover I mine a rough plastic over your carpet. So that You need not to change. And if woolen carpet is ok with you then i would ask to look once at Nourison Hospitality website, they are wool carpet suppliers.

You don't say why she was in rehab (broken hip perhaps?). Are there any other difficulties you are starting to notice? You can get into "fixit" mentality, or you can step back and look at the bigger picture, which is "how much longer is grandma going to be able to live alone there"?

The social worker came and didn't mention anything to us, now that she's home we are noticing the difficulties. She doesn't want to tear up the carpet because it new and the cost of getting new floors. We were hoping to find some runners like the material you put under office chairs that sink down in the carpet instead of resting on top.

Generally, a social worker visits the home and helps you with these obstacles. Can it be replaced with a shorter carpet or hard wood floor?

She is going to have to keep walking. All of the nursing homes are tile, for safety and hygiene, too.

Your grandmother is very smart to understand that carpeting is going to be hard for her to manage with a walker. Can the carpeting be taken up and the floor refinished with hardwood or laminate? Placing mats on top of the carpeting is going to increase the likelihood of falls, I'm afraid.
