Can we use my Mom's money to fix up the bathroom without getting penalized?

We are trying to get our house ready and safe for the end of month.my mother who has dementia and need 24th care will be moving in with us. Not sure if we would get penalized

I am not so sure of this, Pam. Providing reasonable modifications may enable her mother to live at home longer. I'd like to hear input on what reasonable modifications would be allowed if Medicaid is applied for in the next five years. One thing I've become aware of is that many things that are adaptations for seniors are actually inconvenient for younger people.

Sorry, but if she is paying to fix up your house, it's a gift. While it may not be a taxable gift if it is under the IRS limit, it will definitely be a gift penalty if she needs Medicaid within the next five years.
If she needs 24/7 care, get her to a nursing home or you will end up exhausted and possibly dead before she is. 30% of caregivers die first.
