Mom's social security check was direct deposited and withdrawn 10 days later. Isn't SS always 1 month in arrears?

They are behind payments by a month. My mom passed July 3 and I thought that I had to return her July deposit. I called and they told me that they were one month behind, so the payment did not have to be returned.

Any checks issued before death date, OK. If the SS check came after the date of death, they will take it back, even if it overdraws the account.

What day did she receive the check that was taken back. The check received during the first part of January would not be taken back. If she received one during the first part of February, it would be taken back. That is my understanding.
