How long can my Mom be in a nursing home without turning her social security check?

samara Feb 2015
Yes, I've run into same thing Patrice mentions--while shopping around for AL. Some will have you fill out a financial statment as part of their application process. These are the facilities (during my visists) which also accepted MedicAid; they require 2 or 3 yrs of self-pay ability, otherwise they'd go banbankrupt with too many MedicAid patients. I didn't have a problem with providing that information, but my parents were really shocked by the privacy loss. So we didn't apply to those facilities (we're staying home as long as possible).

I had my uncle in skilled nursing for rehab. He then wanted to stay right where he was. I had to show a bank account with $150,000.00. He was private pay and they never asked to see anything else.

Is she in a rehab unit of a nursing home facility? Is Medicare paying for her stay there now? Are you asking how long Medicare will pay? They pay for rehab services. They do not continue to pay if the patient stays on for nursing home care. That is when Mother would have to come up with other means to pay. Her SS may not be enough to cover her NH costs, unless she is on Medicaid. Is she?

If she is private pay they never care where the money is coming from as long as they get paid. Once you're on welfare, then it gets more complicated. Ask the facility's Business Office. They will tell you up front.

Need more information--is your mom private pay? Or Medicaid? Maybe some VA?

A nursing home usually wants the social security check starting the first month.
