Most people sleep more when they get older. I've noticed that many people who take medicines for hypertension also tend to sleep more. How old is your father and how serious is the vascular dementia? Is he taking any medications that add to his fatigue?

I also believe that many elders begin to sleep more because they are bored. I fall asleep myself if I watch TV too long.

My mom is 76 with vascular dementia. She is sleeping more and more. Sometimes it looks like she is sleeping but she just has her eyes closed. Her vision is very bad and i think she closes her eyes because of that. I've tried to keep her awake during the day but she gets so cranky and insists on laying down until we give in. It is a problem at night because she doesn't sleep then. It is frustrating but her body and mind are tired.

I can't answer your WHY, but I can say that we are experiencing the same thing. Mom was diagnosed about 8 or 9 years ago with vascular dementia. How old is your dad? Mom is 93 and people tell me that I should let her rest, but I don't know??
