What is the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia?

My mother who is 86 asked this question, my 93 year old father suffers from what we think is dementia, he is in the later stages of this disease, but I could not tell her the difference. So I am asking for someone to explain what the difference is.

Other kinds of dementia include vascular, frontal-temporal, Lewy Body, Parkinson's Disease with Dementia (PDD) and many others.
