I was just told the lady I've cared for yrs will relocate to a nursing home in less than 2 weeks! Any advice?

Check out sittercity. They are in most large cities. We hired 2 perfectly wonderful folks through them to help when my Mother was living with us.

This is an occupational hazard in the healthcare field. You have great experience and should be able to find a new assignment quickly, if you can get your name out in the right places.

Do you have a small local newspaper or website where you could list your services?

You might also try to network with a nursing home or assisted living facility. I know some families pay for a visitor to come and visit with their loved one several times per week. With a few clients, you might be able to make ends meet.

Also, as a temporary measure, there may be someone who needs a live- in helper.

PHerbert, you are a prime example why everyone needs to save money for those rainy days [when out of work, etc].

Hopefully you will find something real soon. If not, could you roommate with someone and pay that person half of their rent? Or bring in a roommate if you have a spare bedroom?

Correction to above post. I wasn't looking for healthcare, but just a person to sit with someone at home, help them to the bathroom, prepare lunch, etc. not a nursing care.

In most communities in NC, finding a good person to stay with an elderly person is very challenging. I would think that you would be highly sought after, since you have such a good history with one patient.

Once when I was looking for someone for home healthcare, I called the local Senior Center. They had a list of private referrals that was about 5 pages long. I called almost every person and discovered that most all of them were too booked up to assist me. It seems they are in high demand. I wish you the best with your search for a new client.

For the time being, making $10/hr is better than making nothing. Hire on with an agency while you look for another client (but don't solicit agency clients).

I'm a home healthcare nurse and our jobs in home healthcare are not ever secure. People die, people go into nursing homes....it happens. Last winter I had an elderly client who died overnight. I got the call when I was about 20 minutes from his house. Just like that those hours and that money was gone. It's the nature of our business and it is very stressful.
