What do you do when there isn't money for a care home or hire someone in?

Dad left mom very little money when he passed 2 years ago. Moms only income is SS. The little she has in savings is being paid out monthly to a lawyer to get her property back and unblock her access road to her property. Her money is very tight and the thousands anybody wants just isn' f feasible.

So what is the backstory of the property with the road access issues?

If it could be viewed as a non-exempt asset by Medicaid (their homestead property or a working family farm or ranch is an exempt asset but other land or rental / investment property are non-exempt assets ), then mom having / owning this property is going to be an issue for programs that have strict asset qualifiers. You really need to find out just what the property will be considered before more $ is spent on it.

In our little island, there is a local gov't agency for the elderly. They have all kinds of programs - especially for those with low or no income. Because my dad is bedridden, and I'm considered highly stressed, we qualify for one of their programs. Income-wise, we would have disqualified. Every year, they do an assessment interview. They ask about incomes, what dad can and cannot do, what I do for him, do I have a job, etc... I thought we weren't going to re-qualify because I emphatically kept saying that I'm doing fine, dad is not as stressful as before, etc....(compared to when I was caregiving for 2 bedridden parents.) She had these several pages of questionnaire. When done, she looked me in the eye and said that I say I'm doing fine, dad's fine, etc.. and yet from the questionnaire, I'm very very stressed out. I said timidly, "oh... I guess from that I'm not really doing well? And I just Think I'm doing well?" So, we re-qualified!

These govt agencies will have several programs that your mom might qualify. Meals-on-wheel lunches (my dad qualifies for this), day care (there's a long waiting list), gov't caregivers stop by to sponge bath him, etc.... We tried the food supplement program and didn't qualify.
