How much does a good elder attorney charge?

I hired an elder attorney and after consultation he did an act of donation on our house and a piece of property from my mom to me, he had to do a succession on my deceased father to do that, and as a package deal he did a POA,a healthcare POA and a basic will on both of us.. I know it was a lot but I have never dealt with a lawyer before and I can't help wonder if I was overcharged. I am the only child so there is no one to contest or anything

I think they size you up when you walk in the door. The price also does not reflect competence so beware.

It also depends on location, the larger metro areas tend to have higher prices. For me, a Trust, and couple POA's, it was around $1500.00 which I thought was reasonable.

I am in NJ and this was in 2004, but that lawyer did a POA, a Living Will, and a change of deed of the house from my mom, to my mom and me. He also answered many questions. It was about $1200 from what I remember.

Without knowing how much you were charged, no one could give you an opinion...unless you know how long it took him to do those things.

He gave me a price before and we signed a contract. We discussed the price and I thought it was a little high but everyone kept telling me lawyers are expensive

In suburban Chicago, the rate is $350 an hour. If you didn't ask ahead of time, you can almost bet you paid more than you would have had you asked. Always ask up front.

You had a lot of work done. I paid $750 for a healthcare and financial POA alone. $400 for a will/trust. Times two for both of you . . . That wasn't through an elder law attorney, by the way.
