What do you do when your parent with dementia can no longer find the bathroom and repeatedly pees on the wall to wall carpet?

My dad has lost his sense of direction in the house - in the sense that he no longer can find the bathroom on his own. He will pee on the carpet in the family room. My mom cleans it with a machine and it still smells. Has anyone had luck helping their loved one get their sense of direction back? We've put up signs pointing to the bathroom but that doesn't seem to help. Other than the peeing issue, he doesn't seem ready to go into a nursing home. I would hate to put him in one prematurely.

i agree with these people . find out where he likes to pee and make accomodations that work for him . bedside comode and two drywall panels to mimic a restroom stall .. hes not in your world , you have to visit his ..

If I had that situation in my house and the person was using the same spot on the carpet, I would place a cat litter box with a hospital blue sheet inside the box, said blue sheets are disposable and inexpensive especially if you purchase seconds [meaning not first quality but still does the job].

Catch a specimen of urine &. Take to provider, or to lab. He may have a serious urinary tract infection.

Yikes! I had a little experience with this problem early in my husband's dementia. He was definitely not ready for a care center at that point, but it is a frustrating problem, isn't it? I can't claim success for treating this ... it seemed to go away on its own.

Would it help, I wonder if you put a bedside commode in the family room when he is in there? Or would he use a portable urinal? I know that you can encourage him to call you when he needs to pee and you'll help him to the bathroom, but I doubt he would reliably remember to do that, even if he agrees.

If you come up with a solution, come back and share! We learn from each other.
