List three symptoms that may worsen as his or her dementia progresses?

EXPERT Carol Bradley Bursack, CDSGF Aug 2014
Not all types of dementia are the same. Since Alzheimer's is the most common I'll list three ways that Alzheimer's can change with stages, however many people go back and forth between stages, as well. It's not always linear.

1. Short-term memory continues to worsen so they retreat cognitively farther and farther back in time until they may be viewing themselves and their lives at the age of 20 or even as a child.

2. The ability to make sense of the world around them gets worse so confusion and fear - even paranoia stemming from that fear - can get worse.

3. Ability to express thoughts through words gets worse.

There are more but I hope this helps.

What is the purpose of these questions? It sounds like a quiz or someone's homework.

This isn't the kind of question a caregiver would ask. It's a question from a quiz or test.

Poster, do your own homework.

Another sorry. Should have writtent that I got the post titles mixed up.

I really don't understand why this board doesn't have an edit function. It's just common sense and a function of well designed boards.

Yes, the one other question asked is very academic as well, and is also posted as an answer to a somewhat related question. This trainee should not be searching online for answers, but in her text book.

Swallowing abilities may get worse
Tendency to lose balance and fall may get worse
Weakness may increase
Incontinence may develop

Different kinds of dementia have different symptoms. While dementia definitely gets worse overall, some symptoms may actually improve over time, especially with good treatment. My husband's paranoia went away, for example. He had hallucinations in the beginning (common in LBD) but not later on.

Well from my experience, the memory loss makes everything worse, which is what Dementia is all about.
