How do you get a stubborn parent to take medication as directed?

She has a sinus infection and needs meds 3x/day but we're lucky if she takes one. She lives in a retirement home that offers assisted living (she's in an independent living apt now) and medication management but she thinks she doesn't need it. She sometimes forgets to take meds or can't remember if she took them or intentionally skips doses because she thinks she doesn't need to. I think she's in the beginning stages of dementia but she denies having any memory or cognitive issues and won't see a doctor. My brother or I are there every day to help remind her to take her meds (and do other things) but can't be there 3x a day. Any ideas how to get her to take her meds or what to say or suggestions? I would be very grateful.

I have this problem with my mother. She has to take meds very often but because of her dementia she has no sense of time so she thinks she just took it.
My father started to have a check list with times so that she sees we are not trying to over medicate her, sometimes she will check them off herself.
Good Luck and God Bless!!

Could it be that she just needs a reminder but is to embarrassed to admit it? There are pill boxes that have alarms n them to remind the person to take the pill. Also, she might be getting some side effects from the medicine that she isn't mentioning. Ask her about it so maybe the medicine can be changed.

I get shots for my cats who won't take pills. Ask about an antibiotic shot that is long lasting. They make them for humans too.

Hm. It could be dementia. But I'd be worrying about her physical health first, especially if this is a sudden decline. Could be - well, all kinds of things. Just for example, if the antibiotics are upsetting her gut and she's worried about getting to the bathroom on time? Small, hidden problems can do strange things to people's priorities.

Could you perhaps say that because of the sinus infection you'd like her to have a really thorough check up to see that all is well? That could - if the doctor is conscientious - include a mini mental state exam but if she's really frightened of the very idea it doesn't have to.

Mind you, if she's that anxious about a painless, two minute question and answer session there's a clue…

All the same, I'd start with a top to toe physical exam if you can possibly persuade her. Could be blood pressure issues, heart issues, pain issues, all sorts - things that can be nipped in the bud if you're quick. Best of luck, please update.

GET POA!!!!!!!!

Pay extra for medication management. They will hand her the pills and stay there to watch her take them. If she doesn't like taking them with water? Try applesauce. Yum, actually!

Talk to her about assigning you her healthcare power of attorney. Sooner or later, she's going to need your help.

Thanks for the answers. I forgot to mention that we have talked to her about AL but she doesn't think she needs it. Did mention she was very stubborn? LOL I know she needs it because she can't shower, she's wobbly when she walks, and in the last month has had trouble getting to the bathroom on time. That includes med mgmt. We have no POA so she is in control of all her decisions. I was hoping for ways to be sneaky about getting her to take meds or what you say that works for you?

I agree with babalou, she needs the assisted living level. Check her fridge for rotten food. Check her bills to see if they are paid. Check her car for scratches on all four corners. You will see more signs.

Call her doctor and explain the situation. there may be a once a day alternative drug she can take. Also, see this as a wake up call to mom needing a higher level of care, either additional assistance on the IL side or moving her to the AL side.
