What makes the bowl movements so abnormal?

Never a day goes by that I don't have to reclean the toilet that apparently my mother does not see is nasty. There is poop everywhere! It's like she has an explosion of some kind. She can take care of herself pretty well and puts her clothes in the washer but I have had to clean poop off the washer, tub, floor...etc. She seems to think this is normal and if I ask her if she is ok she will say " Yes I guess my system needed to be cleaned out".

Use Acidophilus, yogurt and maybe Gatorade (which would at least help keep her hydrated).

Older elimination systems wear out, just like everything else.

Are they taking some type of laxative? or an antidepressant? For some people, antidepressants can have a laxative effect. There are other things that can cause diarrhea. Sugar alcohols, e.g. sorbitol, used in sugar-free candy, cookies, and ice cream have strong laxative effects. Some medications, e.g. cough syrups, can have a laxative effect for a few people. I would try to track down what might be causing the diarrhea. Often the elder doesn't mind the diarrhea. I guess to them it is better than constipation. But for caregivers, cleaning can get monotonous.

If you can get mom to try acidophilus. (You can get supplements or make sure it's in yogurt, if she eats yogurt.) My mom has issues like that, too, and won't go anywhere until after she's cleaned her system out. My mom won't try yogurt though. She likes to have her wild bowel movements because she thinks she's cleaned her system out and thinks it's a way to lose weight. (Really, she does.) I'm guessing maybe it's just something to do with getting older, a more sensitive system, perhaps? Or medications cause icky side effects like that?

I had the exact same issue with my dad. I had to clean his bathroom in a Haz-Mat suit. There was never a normal BM. It had to explosive, like you said.

I'm not a health food person and I don't know anything about natural remedies (except from what I've heard) but there was a post on here not long ago about some natural remedies for this problem. I don't put much faith in home remedies, I figure if they really worked Big Pharma would have snapped them up. But if my dad were still alive I'd try the homeopathic route. It can't hurt.

In this case I know probiotics are given although I don't know in what form or how much. You'll have to do some research.

Good luck!
