How can I get POA over my 18 year old grandson for health purposes?

He can just sign the HIPPA paperwork which allows the sharing of medical information with those he names.

From what I understand most drug rehab and pysch type places ask if there are any friends or family the patient does not want to see or receive calls from. He can put his Mother and others on this list. If your grandson told the medical team there that they can talk with you then that should be good enough for now. He can also request that no info being to his Mother or others he selects.

The hospital should be able to give you info about Medical POA and provide you necessary forms. This is info from a neighbor who went through this with her son last summer.

I completely forgot to mention that a person in rehab and under psychiatric care may not be considered competent (even if they are coherent) from a legal standpoint. The brain remains foggy for almost a year after a detox when using opiates. This is another reason why it would be good to get a lawyer involved.

I think the document you are in need of is a health care proxy, not power of attorney. This would be a document that allows you to make health care decisions and be able to receive health related information on the person in question. This document allows the person to still make their own decisions while competent, and allows you to make the decisions when they are not competent, and allows you to talk with the person's doctors, providers, about treatment and medications. Some states call this a springing health care power of attorney. You can find guidelines on line as to what to use for this form, provide all information, include both signatures, and have the document notarized. If there is concern that someone else may try to step in and take control, it can be beneficial to have this document created by an attorney.

You don't"get" POA, it is given to you by the competent person who decides you should be the one to act on their behalf when the time comes. I am sure this is not what you had in mind. Please give more info so we can give you a more relevant response.
