Caring for a disabled friend (46). Where do I get caregiver help?

I give assistace to a good friend with scoliosis. she needs me day and night, and she only gets $720 per month. that covers her rent, meds.,food, and her basics but she can't cover mine on her income. She is on Medicaid, and we have filled out aplication after aplication trying to get help but no one really knows were we go to get assistance for us. we live in lincoln ne. If anyone has helpful information.

It looks like your friend is on disability already, so I don't understand why social services can't set up some services. They may not determine that she needs care day and night, though. That's tough to get.

Each state is different. I'd suggest that you type the words "Nebraska" and "disability" into your browser and see what comes up. Follow the links. Also, try your state name and the word "aging." Aging isn't the issue here, yet many resources are focused on aging but can help anyone with disabilities. Under both lists look for something close to "National Family Caregivers Support Program." Each state has a version of this, so it may be under a different name. Try to find a contact. This should be a good route to follow.
Good luck,
Carol

You would have to apply for your own SNAP benefits separately. Her benefits only cover her.

The nearest Independent Living Center may be able to assist with this. ILCs assist people with disabilities to live independently and that can mean anything from benefits assistance to job training to basic life skills. In Lincoln, you will want to contact League of Human Dignity:
(402) 441-7871 or (888) 508-4758
They may be able to assist you in determining whether you can be paid as her caregiver. Good luck!
