Will Medicare pay me to care for my elderly Dad who has end stage renal disease in his home?

Nansacola Apr 2014
I agree with Ismiami, look into a hospice facility. That way you can keep your job and benefits and still spend quality time with your father.

Sounds like dad is ready for hospice. My experience with hospice at home is that a relative needed to be present, they provided 24 x 7 service, while the patient was getting stable and once death is imminent, but they required family be present. I strongly recommend against quiting your job, the effect on your life, retirement and health can be substantial. Look into a hospice facility, You can visit as often as you like, death is a transition. It is a sad one, but his death should not have a permanently crippling effect on your life,

One question about quitting your job, will you have health insurance? Because caring for an elderly relative will be tough on your health.

Perhaps you should consider hospice, in the home.

Are there siblings? Does Dad want to pay you to care for him? If he has resources to pay you a care agreement needs to be prepared by an attorney in compliance with Medicaid regs before he pays you a dime. Have you thought about a reverse mortgage? If medically necessary, the house could be deeded to you after caring for him for a period of two years in most states. Think seriously about quitting your job. It is grueling work to care for an aging sick parent. Many caregivers on this site are grateful to have work just to be able to get out of the house. While at work they have other arrangements for parent like a day care or other in home care.

Owning a home does NOT disqualify you for Medicaid benefits. Does he own other assets? This might be worth looking into, to allow you to give your father the best care possible in his own home at the end of his life.

I don't believe so, he owns his home. I was just wondering if there were any government programs that we would qualify for so I afford to quit my job and take care of him

I don't think so. Medicare does not typically pay for in-home care. Medicaid does, though. Is Dad eligible for Medicaid?
