If the bills are hospital bills there are hospitals that will offer financial aid. Start with the billing department. A financial aid form will be sent to you and you will have to prove through financial documentation and bank statements that you are in need of assistance and if they accept your application they may write off some of the bill. In the gap between my divorce and getting new health insurance I became very ill and had to be hospitalized. I was told by the folks at the hospital about financial aid. I applied for it and even wrote a hand-written letter about my circumstances and the hospital wrote off the whole thing.
