How do I find a caregiver for my wife who has liver failure which give her encephalopathy but not always?

I'd reach out to a local Care Manager near you who can recommend an agency to help you out: www.caremanager.org. They can also assess your situation and give recommendations if there is some planning or other aspects that need to be attended to during this difficult time.

I'm very sorry that your wife is going through end stage liver disease. My dad died from ESLD and suffered from hepatic encephalopathy as well.

If you need a regular caregiver you might want to do some research and find a reputable company in your area that provides caregivers. A company like this will also have a supervising nurse overseeing your wife's case. I suggest this not knowing how far your wife's illness has progressed or how confused she may be. Also, I don't know what her day to day life is like. However, I think I might have a good idea of what your day to day life is like since I went through it with a loved one too. I cared for my dad in my home for years until he got to sick for me to care for him 24/7. My dad had had 3 heart attacks in the past, had had a quadruple bypass, he also had diabetes and age-related decline. While we were focusing in on the heart, waiting for "the big one", the liver disease snuck up on us when we weren't looking.

I'm glad you're here. I hope you use this site as I did, it's a wonderfully supportive environment.

Locally, we have found caregivers through the Council on Aging and also by looking at classified ads in the newspaper and shopper. Also, if you know people, ask around. Good luck.

Hepatic encephalopathy will cause confusion. Ask her doctor to order a visiting nurse for you.
