For the last 2 weeks my 88 yr old Dad has been calling me 10 times a day and nite. Whats going on?

He lives in another state. He calls my cell phone and then my home phone one after another. 1, 2 &3, in the morning. It is very odd and he has no idea what time of day or nite it is? What can I say or do to make him stop calling so much and at such unreasonable hours? thank you

I'll admit I had a situation like this and just turned the phone off. I happened to know that it was more an issue of having time issues than needing any help.

Having something like a urinary issue causes a person to get up quite frequently and they're not always 100% awake and "with it" when this happens. As such, they might just in their foggy haze decide to call you to say "hello."

Or, there are other more serious reasons, too. For example, things like Graves disease can cause a person to lose track of time. They might not have a natural understanding of when it's appropriate to do certain things (like eat or call people). And just putting a clock in front of the person doesn't help, because I tried that.

Basically, you can see if you can convince him to go to the doctor, but if he's confused about the time, asking him to call only during certain hours isn't going to work because he wouldn't know when those hours are.

The UTI suggestion is really true. These infections turn the elderly and ill into confused, crazed people. It sounds like he needs more care than independent living. If you are certain he is cared for, you could block his calls at night. Could his phone be taken or disconnected at night, or does he need it for emergencies? Telling him the time just doesn't work. This is typical of failing health and the need for more care. So sorry.

Notify the management at the Independent Living Facility and perhaps they can help him get evaluated. At some point he will need medications and Assisted Living or Memory Care.

It's possible he has a urinary tract infection. Are you in touch with people who care for him? I'd get him checked for that first thing. What does he want when he calls you?

You say in your profile he lives in independent living but has Alzheimers. Maybe if he's not ill, it's time for more care and some medication to calm him down if he seems distressed or confused. Tell us more about his calls and his overall health and level of Alzheimers.
