How do I find a temporary nursing home today.

My 85 year old dad who has dementia needs to move from his ALF asap to a nursing home. We only need a temporary nursing home until a bed becomes available at the Veteran's Home. No one seems to want a temporary resident. The wait for the application for the VA can take 2 to 4 months but he needs to be moved now.

Where can we find help for placement? We have been told by one nursing home we have applied to that they do not want to help us if we are only going to place him short term. Another one wants 5 years of financial, even though we do not need financial assistance and it is only temporary.

We have 30 days to find a place and the sooner the better, but where???

Have your looked into a residential care home as a temporary solution?

Our dad's PCP is at the VA Med Center. He has been very difficult to work with and the PCP outside the VA moved to another state. The ALF is patient with us and trying to be helpful. We have been working on this for 3 months so far. We are hoping that the VA home will open their emergency bed to get him in the door. We have had the interview with them. It is just the paperwork. Tons of paperwork and again the PCP who drags his feet and thinks my dad is fine.

Let them know you are working on it, keep them updated on your progress. Have Dad's MD order VNA until you can move him, or hire an aide.

It is a very small home with only 10 residents. I don't think this would work there. Also, there is a personality conflict between my dad and one of the owners. I believe that my dad is no longer happy there. I don't believe that this is thereason for the 30 days notice. He is failing and is doing less for himself each day. They are not equipped to handle the increased care. It is a wonderful home. Beautiful and clean, home cooking, activities. I am not complaining about his care. It is just time to move him.

Will the assisted living facility allow you to hire care for him there? They might be agreeable to this since keeping him there is income for them.

ALF can't kick him out is my understanding. Ask director to help you find placement they do this from time to time and might even be able to help place him in rehab nursing facility if it is short term.

His doctor may also be able to use his leverage to get dad a bed.

Your only other option may be to hire care even if 24/7 to care for him at his ALF apt until he can be placed in VA Care facility. This isn't cheap, but an option for you.

Work with the ALF because the VA can take a year. They have lots of contacts. Also call his MD, he may have contacts. Last of all, call the county office of the aging for help.
