Where to find a patient advocate that can help my family with Mom's medical situation?

I think we need more detail from ckpost. I don't know if he can afford a lawyer at $200 an hour or more. I would start by talking to staff at the Nursing Home. Most of them have a Social Worker or a Discharge Planner. Certainly the MD has set some PT/OT goals for the patient. Somebody must know if she is progressing toward those goals or not. Ask around, it's a lot simpler.

If it were me, I'd contact an elder law attorney and a geriatric care manager. See which one can help. If you go to caremanager.org, you can look for a geriatric care manager in your area. I would expect they could help you find an appropriate attorney. Good luck...

My dad's first trip to a nursing home was temporary. He stayed long enough to get stronger and then was discharged. In our situation the nursing home's social worker is the one who helped us. But be careful, like the above poster said, if your mom plans on leaving without Dr.'s consent or "Against Medical Advice (AMA)" your mom will find herself with a very big bill.

Removing a patient from a Nursing Home against medical advice means you sign her out and acknowledge full responsibility for anything bad that happens. If insurance refuses to pay, you pay. If the patient dies, you are investigated and can be charged. Sit down and have a long chat with her MD before you find yourself on the edge of disaster.
