Has anyone seen improvement of patient's dementia with fish oil supplements?

Have been seeing reports of improvement in patients with brain injuries after being given large doses of fish oil. Have also seen that some studies suggest improvement in alzheimers and dementia patients when given fish oil. Has anyone seen first hand improvement with the addition of these supplements?

I agree with pstegman that Pravastatin could be causing symptoms of confusion. In 2009, when in my 60s, I was prescribed Pravastatin for high cholesterol, and within three months I was experiencing problems at work, and my sister told me I needed to think about moving into senior housing because my thinking was getting confused. Just two examples -- one day I went to town wearing two very different shoes and another time nearly broadsided a City utility truck. I knew something was wrong and talked to my doctor, who told me I likely had "a virus." No way did I believe that, and I quit going to him. I got on the Internet and started digging. Eventually I found a European Website that included European studies that showed "confusion" as a side effect of statins, particularly in a subset of women of a particular age group. Bingo! I ditched the statin and went to a holistic nutritionist/acupuncturist who helped me regain my health. It took about three months after I stopped taking the statin to feel normal again, but I simply woke up one morning and knew I had turned the corner back to health. I strongly encourage anyone who is taking statins to read the latest research, which is about enough to make anyone want to pitch the statins into the hazardous waste bin at your local landfill. And, yes, after figuring out for myself what was causing my symptoms in 2009, several months ago the FDA started requiring the patient information that comes with prescriptions to include "cognitive" issues as a potential side effect of statins.

Not Fish oil, but gingko Bilbao seems to be helping keep my husband stable (he has FTD). I can't be sure that's what's doing it, but since I put him on 4 200mg capsules daily (all at one time) he seems to be a little sharper.

Mom won't touch fish, always hated it. One of our favorite dinners. She eats it the way I fix it and doesn't know it is fish. But since we take fish oil, so does she. Except for Protonix, she takes no medicine. But I do give her supplements. At 94, hard of hearing, and dementia. Life is easier for both of us, she is healthy, hasn't been sick in four years and I want to keep it that way. I do think the vitamins and supplements work. She eats very little. Sleeps a lot. Seems like why would I change anything.

None whatsoever. Expensive pee. Eat the REAL thing! Any fishes you like and 3 - 4 X per week. Avocado and nuts also have the good fats in them too.

No improvement with fish oil, but good improvement with stopping Pravastatin and cutting out Coumadin for an 86 yr old woman.
