Dad has stage 4 cancer and needs to switch from Medicare to Medicaid. He was denied after being told he makes too much with Medicare.

We now need to put him in to full time care but don't have the $6000 they want for the first month. We were told once he's in full care he will qualify for the medicaid but that could take weeks to come up with the money, if not a month or more. Hospice says he needs 24/7 care and medicaid only provides a twice a week nurse visit. My brother helps him with his pills and meals but he has to work and I live too far to be any real help.

Jay - so did Dad apply for Medicaid and was denied? Who denied him and why?

Medicare doesn't cover nursing home care at all unless you were released from the hospital to the NH. There is something called admitting pending Medicaid acceptance, but I understand that the process of applying for Medicaid is long and difficult. I suggest you call the Medicaid office and ask them for advice. There are people here who understand this much better than I do. You can also search this site for "apply for Medicaid" to get info from older posts. Good luck.

If he is a veteran I would contact them for all kinds of assistance. Otherwise Adult Protective Services or Area Agency on Aging in his may be able to help you sort all this out.
