Mom wants to be cremated. Is there financial assistance for this?

My mother now @ 95 years old, in her will wants to be cremated upon her passing. I am the only son and do not have the funds for this procedure. Are there any means for financial assistance in this matter for an inexpensive cremation?

smoking in an oxygen tent may inadvertantly produce the same results for free.

purplesushi.. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your mum yesterday, I hope you are doing ok? I'm sure you will be on an emotional roller coaster for awhile. May all the good memories see you through your dark days. Take good care of YOU!(((hugs)))

I want to add that we are purchasing our own urn online - many many beautiful options to choose from, and they are very reasonable.

Cremation is a LOT less expensive than a burial. My mother just passed yesterday, and she also wanted to be cremated. We made the arrangements today (not sure if I can say the name of the company here) and the total cost was just about $1500.00 NOT including an urn (because we didn't like any they had to offer), but the next price up (which included a simple urn) was about $1600...not much of a difference. When you compare the price of a casket (3-4 thousand and UP), a burial plot, etc. be grateful she wishes to be cremated instead of buried!! Does she have any other family members who can chip in & help cover the cost when the time comes?

Social security has a small end of life amount, it is small and takes a little time to receive.
Look at the web site for your county, find the medical examiner or coroner office page. I know my county has very low cost cremation services.

Best of luck to you.

You say your mum has a will, so I would assume that she has a bit of money in her estate? If she does than her estate will pay for the cost of the cremation. If not, my guess would be that the cremation would be free but with no extras frills.
