I'm 52, have early onset Alzheimer's and can no longer work. I have a term life policy but not a whole. What are my options?

I am 52 and am married. I have four adult children that do not live with me. My wife is a dialysis technician. We have medical insurance at her work and I am medically retired receiving a small monthly allowance. It has gotten to the point that we are not comfortable with me being home alone during the day when she is at work (leaving the burner on etc.). We want to live in an assisted living community but I despair that there is one that will accept us as I only have term life insurance and not whole. Can anyone give us any direction? Thanks.

Thanks. I live in the State of Utah.

My best recommendation would be to seek the advice of an elder law attorney that could do estate planning for you or perhaps a financial adviser. An assisted living community is not so interested in your term life or whole life insurance they just want to know if you can pay month to month. Sorry for your diagnosis at such a young age; that's a tough one...

First, I am sorry to hear you have Alzheimers so young... Bless you. What I recommend you do is tour various facilities you are potentially interested in. Also research memory care facilities and nursing homes. Do your planning now as that will make the process much easier for everyone. Not sure how your term life policy will work with assisted living and other. Inquire with the places you tour. Also, if you own your home, you can always sell and use the equity for your care.

Can one of your children step in and provide help?

What state are you in?

Bless you.
