How to get my 70 something mom to get an easier hairstyle that she can take care of?

My mom is on a budget and can't afford to get a wash and set and occassional color every other month. She has trouble reaching the back of her head to comb or style. What would be the easiest style for her?
She is a little overweight and has a slight flat spot on the back of her head towards the top. I think the wash and set ages her more but I think she likes the poof it gives her with her head shape and weight.
Help!

I have cut my mother's hair extremely short, and she is OK with it. It is too short to set, and I think it looks pretty good. As you said, sometimes "set" hair can age a person. It addition, shorter hair is cooler during the hot summer months. You could ask your mother if you could cut it short and see what she says. Hair always grows out, so it doesn't have to be a permanent thing, if she doesn't like it.
