Mom was violent and I think she was a sundowner. By late afternoon, she would be walking back and forth for hours. She'd sleep in the day, but get up at nights. Because she wandered off a lot - at nights - father finally put additional 2 locks on every door - one on the top and one on the bottom. He even put these locks on the door between the livingroom/kitchen.
We also hid the knives. And put away the breakables.
No we did not use childproof latches. We just always cleaned up after her mess with the cupboards, desk drawers, etc....We only childproofed the exit doors.
