How do you find a nursing home, and what if they don't want to go?

@sibling - if you like I could email my cousin in the east and ask for information about where they found out about the place my aunt was in, where it is located etc. My cousin is married to a physician so they may have had easy access to info.

Yes, they do exist here in Canada. My ex mil is in one in BC and very well looked after there. An aunt who died recently was in one in PQ for years, and her family was most pleased with her care. I don't know where you would find out about them, but I suppose googling would be a start. Any seniors agency, or government department may be able to help point you in the right direction . My mother is in Edmonton and I believe there are adult foster homes in the area. For now she is well off in an ALF. though she has considered them as an alternative to a nursing home, should she require that amount of help. I certainly would support that move if a good home could be found. I suppose like all facilities, there are better and worse ones.

We live in Ontario, Canada, and I have never heard of these facilities here, although I seem to remember many years ago visiting my Great Grandmother in a large house with shared rooms (I think 3 or 4 to a room) and it wasn't the best, to say the least. Any Canadian members have experience with the Adult Foster Homes here?

so blessed. my mom is on medi cal and i can predict before even researching that medi cal does not cover adult foster care....medicare does?

I am aware of Adult Foster Homes. It sounds like a good idea for a home setting if you are at your wits end, but you may or may not be able to take advantage of it, depending on you individual situation or state.
Many are private or you pay the portion that medicare/medicaid will not pay.
In GA, we had no choice. We found a wonderful Nursing Health/Rehab Home. It is a non-profit, money comes from it`s wonderful benefactors as well as medicare/medicaid/private pay and benefactors.
My fathers doctor intervened for us and told him that there was no way we could continue the 24/7 care that he required. He had been at the facility last year after congestive heart failure/micro valve prolapse and double pneumonia.
The people are wonderful, the food is fantastic, he has recreational activities every day that he participates in as well as outings.
The best thing to know is that he is happy there and well cared for.

I never heard of adult foster care is that the same as Boarding care facility which is there 6 clients in a regular home but licensed by the State.

I also had never heard about that program-thank you for telling us about-this may be the right answer for many-when I was young I worked for a lady who cared for elders in her home some could still drive and others were bedridden and it was a wonderful place but then the state made it too difficults for these places.

When my father-in-law was in the hospital and we found out he couldn't go home again, it was his insurance (Kaiser) who sent a liaison to talk to us. She was the go-between with the hospital and Kaiser to find out where he should go. It was the liaison that suggested Adult Foster Care to us. We thought it was going to HAVE to be a nursing home, because we had never heard of foster care for adults before. She gave us a list of places that Kaiser had heard good things about, and we went to all of them until we found the place that was just right. Every hospital has someone who deals with where the patient goes, so I'd start there. But I highly recommend Adult Foster Care as an alternative to the nursing home, if at all possible. Good luck.
