What are 'mini strokes?'

Reading all these posts a lot of people talk about mini-strokes, but no one really explains what they are. I know what a stroke is, but don't understand the concept of mini-strokes. Especially when they relate to dementia. Anyone care to tackle this question I would love to hear the answers.

Just dont try to diagnose it yourself. You can make your guesses but anytime there is a question, it is better to be safe than sorry and see a doctor. Tell them what you see and let them figure out the rest.

So I did more research and found out mini strokes are more physical than mental. So I do not believe Mom is having mini strokes. She has no gait problems ever, no problems with speech other than just using all the wrong words and no pther physical signs. Her's is all mental. Her cardia doctor did lower the rate on her pacemaker and I have noticed she has calmed down a bit. I was surprised that a high pacemaker rate could cause an increase in physical things. Learned a lesson there. But mini strokes do not necessarily have anything to do with cognitive behavior. Mom's sister has alzhiemers really bad and i believe Mom is scared to death to see a doctor for that reason. She does not want that diagnosis even though I tell her medicine will help. So we go on.

Minnie strokes are also known as transient ischemic attacks. It is a temporary decrease in blood flow that reduces oxygen to certain parts of the brain which results in temporary symptoms similar to a stroke but not as severe as a stroke. This can include drooping of the mouth, space and dragging leg, or arm dangling, leg usually on one side of the body, slurred speech and the like,it can be a sign of an impending stroke and definitely requires medical treatment.

My understanding, it is a brief lack of blood flow to a certain area of the brain. Just lasting maybe just seconds and quickly gone. Can be caused by plaque, etc. My grandmother had these. We believe mom is having these. Very scary and sad.
