I'm looking for in-home companionship for my mom 2-3 hours/day. What's the best way to find a caregiver?

She needs general companionship, Alzheimer's care, and help running errands.

I called Mayo Family Care and they came out the next day. They are located in Sumner Iowa and service Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Chickasaw, and Fayette.

However, you DID give some good advice about the Senior Center and those other centers.

Hi MyChoice...I don't think you're allowed to promote your business, website, etc...here. Keep it up and AC will kick you out. It's only reasonable that they do so since this is a site for caregivers to get support for our burdens. Although I appreciate that you have your own business to help us caregivers, I think it would be best if you do your free-flowing advertisement NOT on this site. Please don't take it wrong but this is a site for mutual support and advice.

Try your local Senior Center, there should be Brochures around for Home Care and Resource Centers. Also you can talk to your Doctor or see if your doctors actually has brochures in thier waiting room as well. YOu can also search online...

I found my part time caregiver for my mil through care.com. I think there was about a 30.00 fee, but it was well worth it to be able to review the biographies and narrow it down to just a couple to interview.

Thanks mattylar12 and littletonway, this is very helpful!

It's free to search for caregivers and then they let you pay and manage your caregiver from their site too if you want. Best of luck!

www.sittercity.com was the site I used. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. littletonway, what was the online listing service you used to find caregivers?

Yes, talk to your (her) dr and see if he knows anyone. Also Church is a wonderful place to find people that are willing to help out. Or you may find a neighbor that could use a little spending money, and they could do it when kids are in school...

Did your mom have a home church that she went to all the time? That's where I'd start if she did. Someone there must need the money, and is trustworthy I would HOPE!! :)

I would contact her doctor and check if there is a provider he can recommend. In my city we have an online listing for in-home caregivers. They run background checks and references are available. I found 2 companions for Mother who are now dear friends this way. You might do a Yahoo search for in-home health care with your city and state just to see what pops up. In our area, depending on the amount of "nursing" care required hourly rates are $10-16.00.
