What happens when an elder fractured their neck from a fall?

My 87 year old mom fell in the bathroom. Luckily I was there so didn't move her or get her up. She fractured her neck at C1. They are not doing surgery because of her age so she'll go to rehab for 2-3 months they said. Can anyone give me a realistic healing time? 2-3 months is for people who are young and heal well. I have a feeling that this will take much more time to heal and I know that mom will be a bear wearing this hard neck brace.

Bhenson,

I am sorry to hear that your mom fell in the bathroom. Falls are never a good thing especially with an elder. Below is our most recent "Mobility & Falls" article that will help you understand what is going on and how to prevent this in the future.

My Mom went through the very same thing a couple of years ago. She's 84 now but the Drs would not do surgery so she had to wear the neck brace for 6 months. My Mom didn't stay in rehab 6 months, though, probably half that time. She got used to the neck brace but looked forward to having it removed.
