I live in a senior apartment building and care for my husband with Alzheimer's Disease. Am I obligated to go to funerals for other tenants?

I do not have a car and depend on others for transport. I also do not know family members of the neighbors who pass. PLEASE ADVISE. I do not want to feel guilty when most neighbors go and I do not.

My friend lives in a retirement/disabled/senior low income apartments, and she has seen MANY people there die. They usually have some sort of memorial for the person, there in the building. The people in the building know that many older people don't drive anymore, so that's what they do. Or, she will take some of the ladies that really wanted to go to the funeral, in her car. So they carpool. But in your case since you're pretty busy already, I'd say that unless you were really close to the person, then the answer would be 'no'.

Bless you for wanting to fit into your community and to do the right thing. But, no, you are not obligated to attend funerals. And it is OK to pick and choose. If the spouse of a friend dies and you want to go to show your support, do not feel that obligates you to attend other funerals where you have fewer ties.

No---if you are caring for your husband you have enough on your plate.
