Has anyone used the provision in their LTC policy to make renovations in the home?

When I asked a couple of agents about it, they didn't seem clear on what could be done.

try calling the city. here, we have a program that will give 5 grand to renovate things like the bathroom, etc. plus, I'm having a ramp installed outside the house. any courthouse should be able to refer you to programs for the disabled homeowners, even renters can get in on it, I believe. plus, look at your city's website. that's how I found out about ours. they don't advertise, but the programs are out there if you investigate. :D

Careing for my mom at home is very challeging at times she has a wheelchair, Walker a four legged cain shower chair and yes I had to install the grab bars in the shower before she got bad with the Alzhimers and the Dementure we got her will written up and the power of attorney so that I won't have any problems if she should pass away very suddenly. With this program that I'm enrolled with Care Home to keep her at home and not put her into a nursing home so far everything is running smoothly yes she has her ups and downs bur so far things are quiet Dayle of RI

I have done it in the past and it all depends on the policy. Call them and ask them what they will pay for and have them put it in writing. Ask them if they have a list with qualified/certified environmental consultant that they work with. Some companies might also request a doctors note or prescription.

And yet the policy states it can be used for some home improvements to make the house more conducive to the care of an aging home owner.
So, any one have actual experience with this?

The reason there's a grey area is if the improvements are actually necessary adjustments, like the installation of grab bars or something like that. Even that's a little iffy but probably do-able. Consider this possibility: if the LTC payments are going to a family member (this may be possible depending on the policy) then the family member can turn around and pay for the grab bars (example).

Of course not. LTC is just for that.......Long Term Care, not home improvement.
