Is orange juice good for an elderly dementia patient with low blood sugar?

LynnPO Aug 2010
...and... if you REALLY want good advice about diabetic nutrition and blood sugar - check for workshops and classes on menus and diet specifically for diabetics. Your local diabetes association might also have free classes.

Be careful with orange juice!! A friends dad was drinking 16oz of OJ a day to get vitamins and to hydrate BUT he kept getting the fortified stuff with added vitamins and minerals - it reacted with his meds and caused problems!! He had sky high potassium levels that magnified his hear problems. If he'd had the fruit he'd be okay but the fortified OJ was too much.

Are you afraid too much sugar will rev her dementia and and turn her into the Energizer bunny that won't let you rest or sleep at night?

Why not? A little orange juice always helps in these kind of situations. Lynn Bodoni posted the following in Yahoo Answers to a question about how to raise blood sugar: ... I almost dropped my dentures when I read it.

"Regular, that is, non-diet soda is a way to raise blood sugar quickly. Any candy that's mostly sugar (like LifeSavers or something) will also raise the blood sugar. Eat some protein along with this, so that your blood sugar will not spike and then fall again.

Your best choice, though, is to eat a healthy diet, so that your blood sugar doesn't fall in the first place. Protein and a moderate amount of fat will slowly raise your blood sugar and keep it at a healthy level for a period of time. Try to eat whole grains and complex carbohydrates instead of refined grains and simple carbs."
