When should I seek a conservatorship for my mom?

EXPERT Carol Bradley Bursack, CDSGF Jul 2010
If she hasn't given you Power Of Attorney and she is considered, medically speaking, past the point of being able to take care of her own financial affairs you may want to look into it. A Power Of Attorney is by far the easiest way, but sometimes people do have to seek conservatorship. Find a good attorney who understands these issues.

Hi, Carol
I do have a DPOA - but my mom has gotten paranoid recently and I'm afraid she might in her current state revoke it. So far, she has not done so. I am in a quandary, because I need to get her to a doctor, but this is what initiated her paranoia! I cannot get anyone else in my family to take over, and I cannot seem to find anyone else (Adult Protective Services) who can get her to see a doctor. I have been in contact with an attorney, but I am reluctant to start the conservatorship process unless it is "time" i.e. that she is unable to care for or make these decisions on her own ... should I give her more independence, or should I make sure I am paying her bills and getting her the assistance she needs for daily/independent care? I really hate to do this, but it seems like the only way to protect her from herself. According to my aunt, my mom now thinks that I can "see her" when she's online. {{sigh}}
