How do you get a cataract?

Sodonewithsal1 Aug 2014
Being highly myopic is how I got mine.
Babies can be born with cataracts. It's rare, but it happens. The eye color thing has been discounted. People with light-color eyes are no more at risk for cataracts than people with brown eyes.
Advancing age, ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, exposure to certain drugs, certain medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity; smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, genetic predisposure, all can cause cataracts, of which there are several different kinds.
So, yeah, wear sunglasses (Ray-Bans are a good choice; don't go for the cheap ones) eat a lot of fruit and vegetables high in antioxidants, and cross your fingers.

I was told by my eye doctor that everyone will get cataracts if they live long enough. Some people never need surgery. If you have blue (probably green or gray too) eyes it is important to always wear sun glasses when outside as protection; won't prevent cataracts, just slows the process until much later in life.
