I just had breaks done on my car, $1,000. My DH just had 4 tires put on, $1000. The cost of car repairs is not cheap. You may find someone to do the repair but is it fair to expect them to pay for the parts? As said, maybe find a place that will allow you to pay on time.
Your County Office of Aging may have Senior bussing. My County has a bus that goes from town to town dropping people off along the way locally.
I am sorry but there comes a time where the cost of maintaining a car is just not possible. So you need to find alternatives. If this woman is on Medicaid, they do provide a car service. Redcross has drivers. Churches have people who volunteer.
Normally, an Employer wouldn’t be responsible for his employees car repairs. Even if this is a case of someone living with an old person for free in exchange for “helping out” which she can’t now do without a car, she can’t expect a free transmission paid for by the lady.
I hope you will be able to find help in your area if you are so low income you cannot afford getting your car in running condition. Unfortunately I don't know where you would start with asking for help; you have likely had this car for a while now, so I would start with the garage repair folk in your area and ask for help for this dire need to look at your car to assess what it need to get it in running condition. That done, and hopefully on time payments or at a discount, you need to save like crazy, because of course it will only last so long.
I am so sorry; I hope there is help in your area. If you have family or friends consider opening a Go-Fund-Me account. If you are a person of faith and have a faith-based community do check in with your Pastor and ask if he/she is aware of any help in your area to get your car in working order.

Contact your local Area Agency on Aging for information and resources, or call 2-1-1
Local churches might have benevolent funds to help pay for the cost of repair if it isn't too much.
